The mission is located 60 miles SE of Monterey in a valley of the Santa Lucia Mountains.

The Salinan Indians was the tribe that was living in the area.

It was established in July 14, 1771.

It is third of the twenty-one missions built.

Father Junipero Serra was responsible for this mission.

In 1773 the mission moved less than three miles to present site on San Miguel Creek.
