Where is the mission located?

The mission is located in southern C.A..

 

 

What group of Indians was living in the area?

The indians that lived in the San Juan Capistrano mission were the Juaneno indians. 

 

 

 

When was the mission established? What order in the mission chain is it?

It was established in november 1, 1776.    

 

 

Who was responsible for starting this mission?

Father Junipero Serra was responsible for starting the missions. 

 

 

Has the mission moved from its original location?

It has not moved from its original location.

 

 

What does the mission look like? Use descriptive words. Address each of the

following:

  • Chapel: The great stone church is 180' long, 40' wide.  It was made out of yellow sandstone.
  • Bell wall or bell tower: The bell tower was 120' tall.  It held 4 cast bells.  The 4 bells now remain in the campanario.  
  • Quadrangle: The quadrangle was surrounded by the workshops, storerooms, padre's quarters, the Serra chapel, and the soldiers quarters.
  • Priests’ quarters The Priest's quarters Were close to the Serra Chapel.
  • Indians’ quarters The indians' quarters were off the property.
  • Archways The church has many archways even after the 1812 earthquake. 
  • Fields, grounds, gardens The mission has many gardens full of flowers. 
  • Outbuildings The indians lived in out buildings.

What materials were used to construct the mission?

The materials used are adobe, yellow sandstone, and wood.  

 

 

What was the main industry of the mission during the Spanish occupation?

During the spanish occupation they sold cow hides to New England shoe factories.   

 

What, if any, is the main industry of the mission today?

The main industry of the mission today is tourism.  They also have festivals and exhibits throughout the year. The most famous feature is when the swallows return on March 19.  The hold a week long festival for the swallows.

 

 

What was the relationship between the Priests and the Indians?

The indians were very helpful to the priests. 

 

 

Is it possible to visit the mission today?

It is possible to visit the San Juan Capistrano mission today.  The great stone church is as it was from the earthquake in 1812.
